Course Content

  • Session I: Introducing The 1619 Project

Scholars will analyze and discuss main ideas of The 1619 Project after watching a video of author Nikole Hannah-Jones introducing the project. They then examine the question of America’s true founding date, reflect on how myths about history are perpetuated, and learn uplifting stories by and about Black historians preserving Black history.

  • Session II: Examining Common Myths About American Slavery

Scholars will explore common inaccuracies in the way history books explain American slavery and how the legacy of slavery can be seen in modern life. They will strengthen their understanding of how credible sources help us distinguish the myths from facts. They then will examine underreported stories about enslaved and formerly enslaved people who overcame adversity to cultivate hope, pride, and inspiration.

  • Session III: Celebrating Black Americans' Contributions to Democracy

Scholars will evaluate the ideals stated in the Declaration of Independence by comparing and contrasting how these ideals manifest in American society both past and present. They will read and discuss excerpts by Black writers and historical figures who have contributed to the making of America’s democracy and shaped its political and cultural landscape.
